I worked in the Missiles and Space industry. I have heard of last-minute kluges with fingers crossed. Those missiles didn't carry people, though.

Pilots routinely tank up before a flight because they know maintenance is performed by people with a grudge, or people who could care less about the quality of their work, especially in the military!
