The Taste of Silence

THE TASTE OF SILENCE Noisy salt and sulphur at creation Made the world’s taste perfect; But here in my garden it is still. A tenderness of snow floats to earth - Down, soft like ducks’ down. Under the dense hedge The cat sleeps in velvet silence, And the snail takes his stroll Beside the bulging crocus. The quietude tastes primeval.
