Notes About The Poem

I wept when I read this poem on the day Armenia remember the Armenian Genicide. Between 1915-1923, the first and largely unknown genocide of the 20th century occurred in the Middle East. By 1923, the Armenian people had been largely obliterated by their Ottoman overlords, when the population of Turkish-controlled Armenia was reduced from an estimated population of 2 million people to a mere 388,000.  REMEMBER!!

Tell It Like It Is

Tell the generations…
Never to silence the atrocities of the past
And to remember yesterday’s sins 
Just like they were tomorrows

Tell the generations…
Keep your dreams alive by
Inspiring each other and including all 
People, for hopeful solutions and making
A way for the joy, the blessing, the praise
The wonderstruck moments brought to life and never to
wipe away the dark shadows, the disquiet of yesterday

Teach the next generations…
Of the history that hasn’t been taught 
And to remember the past, the pain, the previous
Distrust, despair, darkness, brought onto others
So that it is never forgotten, these burning flames who
Consume the uncertainty and the lies of the day tearing the heart apart
Tell yourself, reassure yourself, that it has all been worth it!  Has it?
