Tales of Wwii

Those who fought in WWII tell their tales Of bravery and loss of friends and kin. Though soldiers of that war were mostly males Brave women did their part to help us win. Father's plane shot down over Germany, With parachute he landed in a lake. Soon he was captured by the enemy In concentration camp plans he would make. Two times with friends he failed in his escape. Third time two friends were killed, he got away. He made his way across the rough landscape. A farmer's daughter helped him hide away. Through grace of God he made it through the war To father children whom he did adore. 1-3-19 Beautiful sadness Poetry Contest Sponsor John Hamilton

This is a very fitting way to honor your stepfather's bravery and heroism. I like how you mentioned that the war was also won my many brave women, who often get forgotten. Hugs ~ John

Your poem will honor your step dad forever. Pass it on to your family. Soldiers who fought in wars and risked their lives for our safety or to protect others deserve recognition and honor.

A fitting tribute & honor to your stepfather in poetic form. Many, many soldiers as well as civilians of both sexes made sacrifices in the total war effort. Great poem.

Nice tribute to your step dad Connie. This was so well constructed and told. So chilling to think humans treat humans this way. Not unlike the harsh cruelty we see humans do to their pets and other animals. What is wrong with us? Everything in your poem was well done!

Hello Connie … so many heroic stories of courage and bravery occur in theatres of war. Sadly not all have an end as in your sonnet - thank you Connie - Lindsay

Thanks for sharing this story, War of course is a difficult and morose subject, but at the risk of sounding negative it's much the way of this world,, it destroys lives and creates Heroes, both which are deserving of writing about. Well done Connie

Beautiful Connie, So true, my Father served in WW11, and when the war ended and the British arrived in Greece, my mom and dad met and married. A story my dad told me. In the Sahara where he was posted for a while , they were accidentally bombed by their own people and my dad and everyone near him all piled into the tank my dad was driving. When they got out when all was quiet, they counted that 21 people had squeezed into a 4 man tank! Poetry hugs and wishes, Jennifer.

I am wondering like Matt if this is true. I wish I knew someone personally so I could do this contest. War poems are so difficult unless you can relate to someone you know. I think you did a great job with it. I saw the Dog's way back home movie today and also "Basis of Sex" Both are very good. Probably the dog was the most entertaining.

Yes Andrea. It is my stepfather's story. If you had scrolled down I did mention it earlier. This was not gory enough for that war contest so I tried to put it in the Beautiful sadness contest. Thank you my friend. I over did it with my reading and now my eye is sore so will wait until tomorrow to make more comments. : ) xxoo

Is this a true story? My late father was drafted at the time of the Korean war and my uncle saw the death camps after WW2. He only told me about that recently - he is about 94 now. Has the world changed so much? There are horrendous things going on in Yemen and Syria nowadays. Keep up the good poetry! Peace & Love Matthew Anish

If only I had time Paul, I would. The little German I know I learned from him. He was a handsome tall dark haired Irishman, a Collins and I believe that is partly the reason the farmer's daughter helped save his life. Thank you for your wonderful remarks on this little sonnet. I wasn't sure it was even good enough to post. Your comment makes me feel better about it. Cheers, Connie ; ) xxoo

Oh, Connie, what an amazing story is revealed in your perfectly-penned sonnet! And to think this happened just as you described. So glad he made it out of the concentration camp. You sonnet deserves in John's contest and would also make a great entry for the war sonnet contest. Perfect form too! Winning wishes for you, Hon! Love, carolyn

Thank you Carolyn. After reading the war sonnets filled with such visceral imagery I don't think it would hold a candle of a chance in that contest, but kind of you to suggest it Carolyn. I hope my poem is different enough to make it on John's list. Have a great day. I am catching up on poetry today. xxoo

A well written sonnet Connie and I noticed it is a true story from the comments. We should never forget the sacrifices servicemen and women make on our behalf. Good luck in the contest. Tom.
