Notes About The Poem

Symbol of Betrayal

Woe to thee with a trait of jealousy,
filled with self-righteous indignation.
You brute, who spews words of exaltation,
Thy tongue reproves your very own decree.

Thy nature be that of a hypocrite...
with one hand offer a pat on the head.
The other, a knife till victim lay dead
Having drawn thy pen, you stab and you hit.

So misguided Brutus, you have become,
deed was done to a Julius-like one.
Were you inclined when Senate had begun?
What has led thee to the darkness succumb?

Whence you see the baneful flaw of your ways
You whilst then know, 'twas blame you earned, not praise.

Thank you very much, Dorothy. This was written at a time when a deeper meaning of the theme was necessary. Whether it fell on blind eyes or not, I made my point. ;-)

I love how David honored King Saul, even though Saul was jealous and wanted him dead. David honored God’s anointed one. The Lord calls King David, a man after God’s own heart. Congrats on POTW, Lin!

Of course, I agree. We are all imperfect. Thanks, Line for your thoughtful reply.

He did those things and honored Saul, but he didn’t always do the right thing. His humble repentance made him see the road he needed to take and was rewarded. Lessons we should all keep in mind as imperfect humans. Thank you for your faithful thoughts, Kim.

Really enjoyed the ‘Shakespearian tragedy’ read Lin. World politics reads like such but it is entrenched everywhere. There are too many people in the world that have opinions that aren’t rooted in fact, blinded by their own ignorance and who manage to divide people and whip up rage bait for their own ends. We appear to have lost the art of debate and need to somehow get it back. Quickly. Belated congratulations on POTW. Cheers - Gary

A tragedy of another sort, Gary. And those with closed minds never believe what is taking place before their tunnel vision eyes once they've cast their lot with the evil doers. Thanks so much for reading me and leaving your welcomed comments.

Sometimes a hit is what is needed to correct a situation, but seldom do the betrayers see themselves as the culprits. Thanks so much for your comment, Seeker.

Too many jealous insecure souls in my real life linnersz, also few here and there scattered like dust beneath nails of virtual vampires too. What a profound write this is. I expect nothing less from your pen! I did play julius caesar in highschool, haha. When i studied english literature! I was k!lled on stage. Ironic. Fun memories! So thought of that. Congratulations on potw! Fave it is

Well, dear friend, there's one less... at least for the moment. Your comparison of them as virtual vampires made me laugh. They do seem to like to bite! I can't imagine you as Caesar. You're more the Juliet type. lol Thank you!

The urge to write have never faltered, Jan. The yen to write of such betrayal is not a joy to write, but it certainly clears the airways of angst. Thanks, Chick.

Very much relevant to the world we live in today Lin, can be very difficult to distinguish friend from enemy, perhaps until it’s too late, (especially online), the olde Shakespearean style works great, is it sonnet season? Cheers David
Lane Avatar
April 14, 2026 at 9:22 AM
It's always Sonnet season and there's no fee for a license to shoot ink from your pen. This is actually based on a Sonnet I wrote when I first joined PS, and if anything... its message holds more truth today than 10 years ago.

We certainly can, Jan. Too often it's based on untruths heard from others, but if they're that easily swayed, it wasn't a friendship worth having. Thanks for your comments.

Dear Lin, I like that you’re pulling back a curtain on the kind of betrayal people pretend isn’t happening. The voice has that old-world bite, but it’s rooted in something real and close. I say let the truth walk in without ceremony, and it lands exactly as it should. Too many people have opinions, and few have the total truth or any truth. Blessings, Daniel

The truth always walks, sometimes runs in with or without ceremony. Betrayal comes in many forms, but you're right about opinions... too many are based on rumor and the truth be damned in their closed minds. Thank you for your thoughts, Daniel.
