Sweet Siesta

There is one thing so comforting,
so warm and cozy it does bring
a smile or perhaps, a hand clap:
its all about an afternoon nap.

My grandmother and I
in the cool of an afternoon would lie
with tummies full of tomato soup
and listen to Arthur Godfrey's group
while slowly our eyes would droop
and we would snooze for an hour or so
waking refreshed and ready to go.

Many years passed for me
in the work-a-day world would be
no thoughts of naps or rest
at the office pace we did our best.

Then, in time came this old me
and every day along about three
comes a breathless spell that seems to say
upon your bed you'd best now lay.

And so I go and settle the quilt
so cozy and warm my spirit is spilt
back in time to that other day
when grandmother and I would lay.
So now I snuggle way into a sweet trap
and Mister and I take our little nap.

Hi Sue, this is excellent! I can see images in this piece. It's also memory refreshing of my grandmother and the great times we had when I was a child. I love it! Ahhh! The golden age. I sleep more now cause I get tired quicker. That afternoon one is becoming a necessity. Vince

Beautiful poetry, Sue. Makes me misty-eyed for the grandmother I always dreamed of and never had. But swiftly moving on, my mind works in mysterious ways and my eye is drawn back to the last line of verse two...I never knew tomato soup was such a diuretic LOL. Love, Nigel

Aw Sue, yes I am back : ) This is such a sweet and nostalgic poem. I am not a napper myself, but you wrote this so well I feel like taking one. ~lol~ I'm giggling as I hope you are not taking that the wrong way! Ha ha! I mean the way you described that dozing off feeling to la la land sounded so dreamy and peaceful. Very sweet to remember your grandmother, and so precious to snuggle with Mister now. Also craving tomato soup. The power of the written word! Ha! Love, Shar
