Sweet Dixie

A land unto its own as old as dirt Condemned by voguish northern state of mind This realm you'd be hard-pressed to disconcert Though his'try would prefer it be maligned The secret twisted oak and winding creek The tapestries of moss that grace the swamp They whisper in a language few can speak Revealing true that fair southern beauchamp There is no match for tender Georgia peach To Cajun gumbo nothing can compare And off the Apalachicolan beach Fresh oysters make the finest southern fare Sweet Dixie with your blemishes and charms No place I'd rather be than in your arms Jan. 4, 2017 The American Deep South - That magical swath spanning from east Texas eastwards and upwards through to the Carolinas For the contest by Silent One Re: Sonnet About Where I Live

Hi Jannie, and thank you! Haha I'd hardly consider myself a southern belle. Mother is from Honduras, father's family are Norwegian South Dakotans, but all those families somehow ended up in New Orleans and the rest is history. I'm a bit of a cultural mutt, but my love of the southern tradition/culture/outdoors is strong for sure.

I always think of the "Deep South", in the 1800s anyways, as quintessentially English. Perhaps I am just being confused by celluloid Hollywood characters but those honourable gentlemen, who had to grapple so tragically when deciding where their prime and overriding loyalties lay, just seem to me, in their manner and outlook, to be so very British! Lovely poem, Carolyn...A real pleasure to have read - My best regards to you! :) john

That antebellum conception (either that, or the insufferably ignorant red neck), is why it’s probably so easy to condemn the south. Contrast that stereotype with my extremely southern English teacher who read us the Canterbury Tales in perfect Middle English. The south I grew up with is timeless, rather than stuck in time, because of the natural beauty of the land and the love and warmth that beauty brings out in the people. There is no other place like it in my eyes. Cheers! :)

this is so BEAUTIFUL, CArolyn. I have been to a few southern states and I think they are gorgeous. So green! One of the best I have seen of the regional sonnets. Mine sucks by comparison.

We agree! Born raised and bred in Dixie myself! Currently living in the hills in Tennessee. You should experience this song by Tom Petty, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ehPUJKk2_dg Every time I hear it, I cry! I think of my deceased father and tears flow..

Sounds like a wonderful place to live to me because your poem is so well written, you do have a knack for rhyming, this was very good. I live in south Texas so does that make me a southerner? :) Nicely done Carolyn.

Thank you very much for the review. I was born and raised along the Gulf Coast (first Louisiana, then the Florida panhandle), and few things to me are more beautiful than a grove of live oaks covered in Spanish moss. I love the south, despite the ugly bits of history people prefer to focus on. And absolutely south Texas counts! :)

Agreed! Have only been away for a couple years and already am longing to go back. There truly is nothing like the south. Most beautiful region on earth, in my humble opinion. And thank you for the positive critique.
