Super, Awesome, and Grand

Rasp-rasp, rasp-rasp, the saw moves up and down;
because coffins are built better by hand.
My young daughter watches in her pink gown;
to make sure that it's right, you understand.

"It can't; it can't be a shabby old box,"
she cried out loud; "best wood, best silk, and, and;
he needs to be dressed in one of his frocks;
it has to be super awesome and grand!"

Her first small pet, Bunny, expired today.
Put in the box with love; sobbing, and tears
we'll surround it with buds, flowers; and pray;
while both stroking its soft downy big ears.

"Can we plant it now, dad?" She said with glee
"And will it grow into a rabbit tree?"

Ah, the innocence of young childhood and the easy acceptance of the impermanence of life. I enjoyed this very much.

I really enjoyed your poem. My first experience of death as a kid was my ginuea pig. I remember going to school that day as a broken child. I enjoyed the last stanza, I thought it worked well. "Rabbit tree" sounds perfect. Have a nice day.

I'd say a rabbit tree is likely. Think like a kid.

indeed! I am still struggling with the last line of the third stanza I may have to adjust the second and fourth lines, still working on it. Thank you for visiting.

A heartwarming, sweetly written story evoking what we all hopefully experience, turning death’s first lesson of death — with a first pet ,,,turning death into some beauty. And choosing the Sonnet...oh, perfect. A Fav for me. You’ve caught me as a new sister poet fan

I am flattered, Sally thank you I found the sonnet form a little taxing, but I will revisit it at some point.

This is very cute, Terry. Especially showcasing the innocence of a child in the final couplet. An enjoyable read:)

Thank you for your comment. I am very new to writing poetry, so making myself exercises in different poetry forms, which this site is perfect for. I found the sonnet particularly tasking, and I am still not happy with the iambic stresses in a couple of the lines. But I enjoyed the challenge and writing the poem.
