Summer In the Meadow

Down in the meadow, bees are buzzing away cows laze about, after feeding all day Wildflowers attract butterflies, in pastel arrays lapping up nectar, in the warm sunny rays Down in the meadow, lambs frolic and play ladybirds climb grass tufts, that gently sway A farmer wipes his brow, whilst loading hay midges swirl about, as young horses neigh Down in the meadow, goldfinches come to lay gobbling down thistle seeds, without delay Baby spiders spin webs, in more than one way none of them mind each other, so all’s ok Down in the meadow, an old donkey brays don’t think he’s cross, just dislikes his dray The residents don’t care, what this ass says all have things to do, and ignore me anyway Monorhyme Originally posted 04/19/22 2022 Poetry Marathon Mile 6 Poetry Contest Sponsored by: Mark Toney 07/04/22

Hi David - I applaud you for the difficult task of putting together such a great flowing monorhyme that serves up a curve ball of a last line that had my wife asking me what I was laughing out loud at. :) Just because I felt like doing so, I googled monorhyme; I'm sure you'll be interested to know that it is a popular form of poetry in Arabic, Latin and Welsh works. Now there's a contest idea. :) Cheers - Gary

Certainly the Latin language, I might have some knowledge of, but Welsh and Arabic are all Greek to me, I’m delighted you got a good laugh of me making an ass of myself, so did I, it seemed like the perfect line to finish up on, thank you so much for an enlightened comment, cheers David

David, some impressive monorhyme going on here, along with a bucolic word painting of the peaceful summer meadow, and a clever ending. A delightful read, congrats on your marathon win ~ John

Thank you John, I was about halfway down, when the ending started to develop in my mind, which is always a great goal to work towards, cheers David

David, this is a pleasant, peaceful, picturesque poem. What I especially like is you carry the monorhyme through 4 stanzas and none of it sounds forced. Also the humorous play on words at the end is brilliant. And I learned two new words- midges and dray :) Congratulations on your win on Mile 6 of my 2022 Poetry Marathon Contest. Mile 7 has already started!

Thank you Mark you certainly read through quiet considerably and carefully, taking everything in, not many drays around these days, but certainly the midges are abundant as ever, cheers David

A very enjoyable read my friend - every human, animal and insect busy in his way, 'The residents don't care, what this ass says, all have things to do, and ignore me anyway'. Hugs, blessings, Jennifer.
