Spy and Chance
Spy the spotted owl was afraid to venture out of the woods
Because he might lose his place, and his standing was good.
Barred owls were taking over the forest, for sure.
A terrifying raptor and no immediate cure.
To the rescue came Chance, a German shepherd mix.
He saw that Spy was in a terrible little fix.
I will stay in the forest and help you establish your nest.
He came daily, and became Spy's friend, who was the best.
The old growth forest was a great place to find dead leaves and such.
The two friends scampered and flew; their union a perfect touch.
Others tried to get close but were soon discouraged away.
For these two were excited about their friendship play.
They got closer and closer as months turned into years.
They grew old together, until they experienced one of their fears.
Spy the spotted owl got an injury that caused him to die.
Chance saw his spirit leave him, and fly really high.
So they still played together, the two best friends, after all.
People asked why Chance was leaping up, oh, so tall.
He’s playing with his spirit owl friend, and happy as can be.
Other humans shook their heads, not being able to see.
