Speaking of Riddles - Here's One

Fellow travelers, an itch I'd like to scratch with you: 'His corpse was riddled with bullets' is a real head-scratcher. Does it imply that either the corpse or the bullets were body-snatchers? I know. I know. I'm supposed to picture lots of bullet holes in his corpse. But why 'riddled?' What's the puzzle here? I don't get it. Maybe you do. If so, please leave me a note, my dear.

My answer has holes in it; sorry, Gershon. The corpse and the bullets were undesirable—lots of shots, only one corpse.

I think the word riddle Gershon used in this case means many... Just guessing.
