The numbers in the US are simply taking off, increasing, its baffling how stupid their govt is, i suspect money is an evil alterior motive.

It's terrifying and dumbfounding. I would be bold enough to say it is the primary motive. Money talks... and talks and talks. It defies logic. I feel pretty confident Canada won't be reopening the border anytime soon.

I remember my grandmother telling me about the Spanish flu when I was a kid. I never dreamed I would live thru none myself

A lesson forgotten by many without a grandmother's knowledge it seems. My grandmother will be 100 next week. It is a little mind boggling to think of all that she has seen. Keep well my friend, xomo

None offense taken (if that WAS your intention I actually found it kind of amusing ... people are too sensitive these days methinks). In any case thanks for the explanation. I see it now. (makes much more sense than my garbled interpretation. LOL!) Browsing the comments here: so Spanish Flu didn't come from Spain then? Interesting.

Definitely could learn a few things as a result of this worldwide scare ... a greater preparedness, and maybe some added gratefulness for the things we took for granted, and now cherish like precious jewels. It's a good senryu you have here, Maureen. However, I will admit, the connection to your title has me perplexed (is "Spanish lesson" a subtle hint-jab to us Americans who don't often recall what we learned in Spanish class ... and you're relating that to the current state of affairs?)

Hi Timothy. Oh my goodness, No jabs! The title refers to The Spanish Flu aka the 1918 flu pandemic. Thank you for asking, I hadn't thought of that. I know I can be risqué, but I do really hate to offend.

Before I wrote this I did not know that it was called the Spanish Flu because of the reporting, NOT where it originated.

You and your pen are optimist who probably do learn but sadly most do not and will convert to being regular routine round humans when next their perceived 'normal' returns. Keep on sailing thru positive air though - I'm there, and others as well. Poetry hugs ... CayCay

Government appointments to the pandemic department were political rather than due to education, experience, or competence, hence the world-wide fiasco. Some nations, like the USA, are very slow to learn from experience because it is not about saving lives, but saving face! Aloha! Rico

So sadly true. Meanwhile in Canada we have a Chief Public Health Officer who is a physician with expertise in immunization, infectious disease, emegrgency preparedness & global health security who still gets push back... cuz MONEY rules. Sigh.

Pity our leaders didn't look back at history, they might have learned something. Tom

I can't say that I am disappointed in my government's response; history will tell, as it always does, but I suspect some legacy making. xomo
