Dilly's  'the space between stars contest     10/25/24

I'm merely mortal, a speck upon Earth, circumspect of gazing into distant heavens, spellbound by stars staring back at me. They inveigle my silly senses. I strain to hear their pellucid inscriptions that shouldn't be clear to humans, but are transparent to me. I personify celestial orbs, attempting to break their astral coded whispers through galactic places that we thought were empty spaces between each twinkling of starlight. They wink through invisible portals, murmuring secrets about us or whatever stars are interested in. Each other? Gossipers! What secrets do they share, or keep? Perhaps they're more like us than we suspected. They have names, grow old, eyes dim and die a cosmic death. I've been wondering... where do fallen stars go when they die?

Hi Crystol, I haven't read all the poems on the winning list, but I'm sure it was difficult for Dilly to discern those that best exemplified what she was seeking. Thanks a lot.

Hi Paula and thank you for your kind words. I think I wrote one about fallen stars some years ago. I'll have to look that up.

There you go again, Lin. You’ve got me reading free verse again… crikey, you might turn me into a proper poet… like a fallen star (thanks John) Much enjoyed, this… except for one little detail… do the stars take their teeth out at night?

No fear, Terry of the stars or free verse. Think of them as a squish mallow toy. Look them up. With little grandchildren, they are part of the family.

I like John's comments, they become poets. Beautiful.

Dear Lin, What an enjoyable read with so many great questions about those pesky stars. I think when they die they become black holes. I loved these verses " I strain to hear their pellucid inscriptions that shouldn't be clear to humans, but are transparent to me." I think we as humans have so many questions about the stars and the skies, and maybe one day we will know. I think that you have a winner! Autumn Blessings, MY Dear Friend, Daniel

Thank you for imagining where my thoughts took me, Daniel. I started with something that rhymed... horribly, so I threw it away and just started rambling. lol

It's hard to grasp how infinite the universe is, by the time they've twinkled at us they're probably burnt out , when death comes they implode and become black holes in space. Frightening thought, when our star (sun) dies it will probably suck in the earth too, I hope I'm not around when that happens. Good luck in the contest Lin. Tom

I hope I'm not around either, Tom, but I think there's a different outcome awaiting us. I doubt we're in a black hole... we still have the sun star brightening our days. Thanks!

Hi John. Now, there's a theory I'd love to believe. They've certainly witnessed enough to be able to write beyond what we could imagine. Did you just called me, 'faded?' lol Thanks!

A beautifully crafted poem Lin, and all in free verse too, you ask a lot of relevant questions, some we have answers to, others we have no clue, but yes they are a lot like us, some burn out fast, others hang around for what seems like forever, always some gossipers even in the heavens lol! All the best for contest cheers David

Hi David. Double thanks for mentioning the line limit in your response to my comment on your poem. I had to get out the hedge clippers for mine as well. Lol. I imagine a few as old ladies with dimming brightness, shaking their stardust at us and clucking how spoiled a generation we've become.
