Sour Grapes

When I was young, I spent one summer day at Grandma’s. There, some grapes I spied looked fine. Yet even now I can’t recall the way they grew! I'd known that grapes grow on a vine, and yet on vines I don’t think these grapes grew. I’m picturing them on a bush instead! I’m pretty sure they seemed a hue of blue, or were they purple? Tempted, I was led by their plump look to pluck them eagerly. A child was I, and simple things I found like lovely grapes could fill my heart with glee. I tasted one; then spat it on the ground! How like those grapes are other things I’ve tried in life – things looking sweet, yet sour inside! Written Sept. 1, 2018

Hello Andrea … you are a 'master' or should I say 'mistress' of sonnets, and life certainly has a number of bitterness we get to swallow - thank you Andrea - Lindsay

Eugh! Had that experience with a cherry from my tree, once; it just wasn't quite ripe, although it looked ripe. A well done sonnet; great imagery and flow.

There seems to be some types of fruits that grow wild and never taste good. LIke my plum tree. I've never tasted anything good on that tree. It's a decorative plum tree I was told. Those grapes I saw in my youth seemed plenty ripe to me. But who knows. Maybe they eventually ripened after all.

I REALLY like this sonnet--the way it tells a true story leading up to the theme! Janice

Ahhh it takes patience to let them ripen. But I clearly get your meaning here Andrea. A great entry for the contest with a meaningful message! : )

A story told so simply creates a beautiful Sonnet ...only in words of an expert pen. Perfect, as always, Andrea.
