Notes About The Poem

5/5/2026 for Some Fairytales - Limericks Poetry Contest sponsored by Natasha L Scragg

Some Fairytales - Limericks

"Grandma and a drink from the blender -
a fine meal, but could be more tender",
said Wolf two minutes before
Little Red opened the door,
making him a two-time offender.

A witch said, "Welcome, Hansel and Gretal.
Should I cook you by oven or kettle?"
The hag (just back from the coven)
heard Gretel say, "I like 'oven'".
Hansel said, "You're a sister with mettle".

Jack's mother's son was not bright, she'd allow.
The son (our Jack) was sent to sell a cow.
The family had no means,
but dull Jack bought only beans,
and returning said, "Should I've got Kung Pao?"

A duckling could afford only off brand,
so he was ostracized, bullied and banned.
But as time slowly passed on,
he became a well-dressed swan,
and told those damned ducks to pound sand.

Fairy gave Pinocchio latitude,
so the puppet improved his attitude.
Can you imagine his joy
when he became a real boy
with a heart overflowing with gratitude.

When Rumpelstiltskin walked through the door,
my life suddenly, changed - that's for "shore"!
I'm a queen and have gold,
more than my arms can hold,
and he broke when his foot stamped the floor.

A girl came to the castle one wet day.
She was a princess and allowed to stay.
She complained of a pea -
married the prince you see,
who regrets it to his very last day.

For snow white clothes, you must give them a rinse,
but a snow-white girl needs more to convince.
Dwarves numbering seven
won't send her to heaven.
For that, she'll need a well-built, handsome prince.

Three little pigs asked, "What will it take
to build a house fit for a strong quake?"
For wolves the best trick
might be to use brick,
but, for earthquakes, that is a mistake.

A frog waited patiently in a well
until a golden ball finally fell.
A princess soon followed,
Frog nervously swallowed,
saying "Kiss me". Princess said, "Go to hell".

Hello David, Congratulations on POTD that made me grin. You let the big bad wolf talk like he’s filing a complaint before Red even walks in. You’re letting the old tale shrug off its seriousness and just be a little messy and human. I like that looseness. Blessings, Daniel

Hi Daniel, thanks - yep, this is the "loose interpretation" of some of those fairy tales - lol!

Of course, you’re great at these, with such a sense of humor! I like the Snow White and that Gretel hd the mettle to choose “oven.” Of course we know she shoves the coven-hag into the fire. I always think of myself in the princess and the pea story. My Prince kept asking me to marry him until I said yes…we hadn’t know each other very long. LOL (married for 46 now)

Thanks, Kim - I guess your prince saw something and sometimes that doesn't take long. According to the Linda Ronstadt song, it only takes "just one look".

Thanks, Hilda. Hmm, your comment makes me realize that maybe I should polish the way I tell these stories before I tell any fairytales to my (future) grandson, granddaughter.
