So Close Yet Out of Reach

Across the room her face shines bright while talking with her friends; her presence fills me with delight with beauty that transcends. She caught my eye right from the start, but feelings that I can’t impart. She caught my eye… she caught my eye but knows not what is in my heart. Across the room her face shines bright as feelings I conceal; she thinks me as a friend alright not knowing how I feel. I’m just a friend; we talk of life; our busy lives so full and rife. I’m just a friend… I’m just a friend which fills my very soul with strife. Across the room her face shines bright so close yet out of reach; to woo her just would not be right, and love would be a breach. To someone else her life belongs, and I will not commit these wrongs. To someone else… to someone else she walks away; I sing sad songs. April 21, 2018

Wow, this is amazing! I love how you had lines that repeat for every stanza. It added all the more to the overall impact of the poem. Would love to write one of this style myself. :)

Thank you, Eunice, I'm glad you enjoyed it. This form is called a Trijan Refrain which I found on Shadow Poetry; they have a good explanation. I have written several other poems using this form but have only seen one other writer on PS use it. Thanks for taking time to read it. John

Sometimes those who are "just friends" can inspire the most meaningful love of all, John. For this, perhaps a happy song? Enjoyed reading; you have a nice, clear writing style that captures the reader's attention and keeps it throughout. Hugs, Carolyn

Carolyn, thanks so much for taking the time to read more of my writing, I appreciate it. It is true that "friends" can have a very meaningful love but in this poem his feelings go beyond friendship; but perhaps you are right, if he dared to cross the line it might be a most meaningful love.

John, Jan herself would be SO proud of you for this poem. I used to be friends with the Jan who created this form. Her last name escapes me now. It's not the Jan of Soup. Anyway, I recall writing this form a few times after she introduced it to our group. I wonder how she is doing today and if she ever goes online and sees people using her beautiful form.

Thanks so much, Andrea, Jan’s last name is Turner. When I was researching the form I found a great explanation on Shadow Poetry and one of the examples they gave was a poem called Seaside Lament which the two of you wrote together in 2006...small world. John

Thank you so much for your wonderful comment, Susan, your thoughts and encouragement mean a great deal to me. This poem was inspired by the song “You Don’t Know Me” which I heard on the way to work several days ago. John
