SIZZLING STEAM AND STENCH OF SULPHUR SMOKE
Impressive machine with power in plenty.
Ten tons of water tanked in its tender
Along with coal cobs free from slate and slack.
Essential fossil fuel feeds firebox flare
That spews out sparks along with thick black smoke.
Ash and brimstone fume flung into the air.
Sulphurous stench and odour of coal tar.
And sweetish smell from the hot axle grease.
Clinker, cinders, ash and clouds of black soot.
Hear sizzling sound as scalding steam escapes.
Spent steam and smoke produce the huff and puff.
As steel cylinders create motive power.
Back and forth forces now push the con-rod,
Stroke after stroke working to turn the crank
And haul the heavy payload mile on mile.
Impressive machine with power in plenty.
