Simple Blessings
You bounce around in little hops all over the yard,
Not bothered at all that you can’t walk.
You chirp and tweet and twitter at me,
Angrily demanding your daily seeds.
Like a fallen brown leaf you descend
Gracefully to the ground.
Then –
In a flash –
You soar away,
Owning the sky, the trees, the power lines.
Black, beady, keen eyes discover spiders
In their camouflaged crevices.
Bravely you flick and snap at any interloper
Not part of your family group.
Unable to resist a small puddle on a
Rainy day, you take a few swift dips,
Then flit off to a soft, sandy spot for
A dust bath.
Such a tiny bundle that holds
A world of energy and zest,
Delighting in the simple joy of being alive.
Through your ephemeral existence has
God taught me the true meaning of
Happiness.
