Side Board
A slice of strawberry shortcake
Upon the side board lay
And there are those butterbeans
Twenty of them I say
And one-half of a brown biscuit
Upon my little plate
A juice glass, ice cube, and tea
One butterbean I take
There upon the side board it lay
A small slice of pound cake
And twenty butterbeans 'pon my plate
Cake my sweet mother makes
Eat your butterbeans _now here
One she places in my mouth
I wanted strawberries and cream
Butterbeans could do without
Finally last of the butterbeans
Mom gets all the sliced cake
Oh! The first bite a dream so sweet
Ummm!! Strawberry cake
Finis'
I can remember as a child that
I would sit right across from
the place where mother cut up
the dessert and placed it on
little plates for us..It was
a cabinet that they called
the side board..I don't know why..
I would sit looking at the dessert
and want dessert and have to
eat vegetables and bread first..
