She Knew the Look
Foster child had not seen a kind smile like this for a long time
People usually had awful things to say about her
She was not accustomed to feeling welcomed or approved
She stared at the friendly clown, a teenage girl
Can I be your daughter? She asked her.
The clown, although only fourteen, felt her pain.
She gave the child a long deep heartfelt hug.
She herself had been an unwanted child.
She knew the look.
