Sensed Him Before I Saw Him
I sensed him before I saw him.
Felt his heavy hot breath on the back of my neck.
I knew he would be large.
I turned; he was enormous.
Darker than I imagined a nine-foot grizzly bear.
I had always thought they were dark brown.
This was one black as a patent leather shoe.
He had a roar that would knock a train off its tracks.
Knowing this I roared first.
My roar came from the hallows of hell.
He gave me a look of pure fear, hesitated a minute, then turned and ran off.
On four legs, not on two.
Never to return.
I am thrilled to say
I can outroar a grizzly if I have to.
