Sanctuary, Sanctuary
‘’SANCTUARY, SANCTUARY’’
Hear the hunchback’s desperate cry.
For the love of a beauty,
he will give his life to die.
In the mist of Île de la Cité
with flying buttress and vaults of stone
one poor soul has love undaunted
sounds the bell tower’s mournful tone.
Mercy on this wretched human
victim of a woman’s charm
servant of the holy shadows
in the sacred Notre Dame.
In the face of man’s achievement
centuries of wars have passed
as Our Lady withstood time
and even through the fire did last.

The poem and 1st place win are dedicated to the memory of my mother,
Mae Medders, 1922-1996, whose postcard from Notre Dame was the inspiration for this title; for on it was written only these two words.
