Sacred Ground
As I sit here in this very special place
Trying to make sense of the human race
This has always been sacred ground
To the Lakota people
Then the white man came and invaded our space
Taking it all away leaving very little trace
Of such a holy place
The beauty of what we have found
In this very sacred ground
I feel blinded by the truth
As we stood by our words and our ways
Only to learn the white man burn
Trying to hold back all my tears
Running down my face as they slowly
Disappear into all of my fears
As we cry out to you oh great one
We are all part of the same tribe
So few of us are still alive
When we used to thrive
Can you please tell us why
When we have all tried
And so many have died
The old ways have all been forgotten
Our hearts and spirit soar so high
Up into the sky
Where we will learn the answers why
For now, can you put an end
To all of the white man's lies
So you will put a gentleness
Back into your people's eyes
Know that you bring out
The Indian spirit that lives within me
We have learned to live free to always see
There is a holier place on the very sacred ground
That is not possibly found
Until we hear our last sounds
As I sit here in this special place
Trying to make sense of the human race
I know there isn't a holier place
Until we become part of your grace
I'm going to follow you oh great one
Won't you lead your people home
Because we have found the love and
Understanding that life is demanding
We give it to you oh great one
As we cry out sitting here
On this very sacred ground
Knowing our faith in you
Is so sound
And you will always
Be around
