Risk Committing Love

It’s easy to say, “I love you.”
It’s easy to say, “I care.”
It’s easy to say, “I need you.”
     Words the vibration of air.

          Smile with me
             Trust me
                Hold me
                   Talk with me
                     Sing to me

It’s better to feel, “I love you.”
It’s better to know, “I care.”
It’s better to realize, “I need you.”
     Love’s a commitment to bare.

     Tell me you love me,
     Tell me you care.
     Tell me you need me,
     Your heart-truth to bear.

     Don’t expect, “I love you”,
     If feelings aren’t there.
     Tell me you love me,
     Don’t ask me to dare.

     If I don’t love you,
     That isn’t your choice.
     You loving me
     Is your risk to voice.

"Without a hurt, the heart is hollow" ('The Fantastics' musical). You are right, John, in that saying "I Love you" can roll off lips like a shopping list. The actions, the sacrifice, the subjugation of one's needs to another's become the substance of love. Why, indeed, stick around if love given isn't reciprocated? A thought provoking write. Best wishes, Brian

Welcome to Lifetime here at poetry soup, John. I like the message of your poem, There is always risk in saying I love you to a person, but I think it should be said if it is truly felt. The risk is worth it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts through you poetry. A poet friend in Texas, Bill

I've always thought it a unique responsibility if someone tells you they love you. Not necessarily that you must love them back, but if you do not, I think you must be tender with their heart and cause as little pain as possible. Your poem made me think of this again. Nicely done!
