Remembering December

Remember,
My Dearest,
December.

On my birthday we met,
The fifth day of the month,
I shall never forget
That awesome occasion--
Your breathless expression,
With winsome persuasion.

A week later, first date, I was late
You patiently waited, knowingly,
Guessing our inevitable fate.
On Christmas Eve I gave you a ring
Nothing too elaborate, I thought,
Small diamond, a tiny dainty thing.
We wed the following Christmas Eve
I went away to fight the war, and
In December, you were left to grieve.

I have found the same disagreement between syllable counters -- especially when I was still teaching school. With so many dialects spoken, the topic was a difficult one to get across to students.
