Remember

remember the words that are caught
being casually spat from the mouths of a politician,
for they mean so much more than any of the speeches
that s/he has delivered to us all
after a panel of speechwriters
stayed up all night
deliberating the perfect choice words
to woo us
sheep
into further deference.

remember that these individuals mean what they say
when they are “on,” like an actor in front of the camera,
just as much as when they are “off,”
like someone who’s just pulled up a barstool after a long day at work,
asking the bartender for that first drink---
the difference is that somewhere along the way,
they decided that decisions that should be made by the
many, instead,
should be made by the few &
that they are one of the chosen
(as if by some greater force than humankind)
to stand tall amidst the rest of us &
shine
shine
shine,
like some bastion of light,
like some lighthouse peering out into the raging waters,
in order to save us all from
crashing into the rocks,
whilst bathing in
power.
