Relent

Most of the night was a blur Couples giggling as they passed Some teens jostling each other in the shadows, the smell of cheap alcohol carrying on the night air The neon fuzz of the carnival coloured the night sky in purples and pinks, the grating screeches and screams of people forcing me along the canal pathway. It’s shadows and shrubs welcoming me like a close friend. Further ahead in the cone of the one working light I spotted a young girl as she skipped back and forth as if playing hopscotch, most would be suspicious of a young girl outside playing at this late hour but I knew she was a scri in disguise. She smiled at me as I approached Wow pretty lady Dark night scary Her conversation disjointed cracked almost human Yeah almost And what can we do for the pretty lady I am looking for some free Aaaah free free it comes with cost something personal I twirled my mothers ring in my hand She licked her lips hmmmm yes suffice as she snatched it from my palm Take my hand It was strange no flesh just bone fragments She led me up the stairs that led from the canal path to the main road above Each step seemed to darken as we climbed Finally reaching the summit alone our deal done As I stepped upon the pavements the effects of the free started to take hold I closed my eyes surrendering once more
