Based upon the sad end of a fine and faithful dog that was truly and deeply loved!!!
Redbone, A Mighty Blow Given Night That You Died He a mighty dog, grandpa just called him Redbone As big as a hog, he weighed in over six stone. Part black bear and part mutt, his growl scared one and all Hellfire in his gut, Pap would bear hunt him each Fall. Redbone, a mighty blow given night that you died. One young lad, went out into the dark woods and cried. As a pup Redbone was as beauty to behold Such as never before loved by a six year old. Soon red coat shining, he became muscle and bone That is why our Ole Pap came to name him Redbone. Redbone, a mighty blow given night that you died. One young lad, went out into the dark woods and cried. Eight years flew on by and Redbone was loved by all Eigth season he was slower to come when we call. Ole Pap call for first morn's hunt and heard not a bark Redbone only growled showing his teeth like a shark. Redbone, a mighty blow given night that you died One young lad, went out into the dark woods and cried. Ole Pap shot back, last bear hunt tore you up a bit Then his chew of tobacco, oft front porch he spit. Redbone just lay there, Ole Pap said, old friend just rest You have been a fine hunting dog, the very best. Redbone, a mighty blow given night that you died. One young lad, went out into the dark woods and cried. Next night midnight moon rose, we heard a moaning yelp Our old faithful friend, our Redbone's last call for help. Ole Pap went out, came back in with sad ashen face He said, Redbone is gone, friend we can not replace. Redbone, a mighty blow given night that you died. One young lad, went out into the dark woods and cried. R. J. I do love dogs, and this is such a lovable poem. I have had 5 dogs during the "empty nest" and have done a pastel of each. I call it my "dog wall."

Thank you my great friend. I wish I had the ability to have painted my dogs. Surely you are very blessed in having your, "dog wall" to see anytime that you wish.

Thank you my good friend. Seems strange how a pet can become as a beloved brother but such was the case with my beloved Redbone.

What a lovely tribute to your dear Redbone. No matter how many years pass us by..The memory of our pets wil remain with us forever..The loss to hard to bear even as adults..and even harder as kids...I so love animals..especially dogs..So this poem transmitted many feelings inside me.

Thank you my dear friend. So true, it is harder to face and endure when a kid. I am a dog person. I love cats too but dogs are my favorite. I've been blessed in my life to have had three such beloved dogs. Buster and Midnight were the other two .And when Midnight died, I vowed to not own another.

What a beautiful aching story! What a gripping weave! What a humming refrain, a nostalgic sad music flowing inside the heart! How elevated and refined a relationship! A great write of high value, a masterful pen, a heartfelt depiction of the beauty of human nature as related to animals beauty.. a genuine pearl of poetry! A FAV. Thank you so much Robert for sharing. Stay safe and blessed.

If Redbone is a literate dog in the literate dog afterlife, his heart will melt at the young lad's eloquent tribute. Nicely expressed.

Thank you my very good friend. As in all of my poetry truth rests within, in varying amounts dependent upon the poem. I try not to go overboard when expressing sorrows, and great losses suffered. For long ago I learned to hold back something for myself.

Oh, I truly adore this beautifully moving poem of Redbone, an irreplaceable, fine and faithful dog, dear Robert. Your captivating emotional story-telling is enlivened with heartfelt imagery, flowing rhythm and wondrous rhymes. The tale of Redbone unfolds smoothly as the spirit of Redbone and Ole Pap gloriously come to life.. I understand why the young lad went to the dark woods and cried at his beloved dog's passing.. An excellent and shining gem. Warmest wishes always my wonderful friend.. ~Susan

My dear friend, your sincere words cheer this old poet's heart. I know that with your keen mind and your deep insight, you know exactly who the young lad was, that went into the woods to be alone to express the broken heartfelt enormity of his grief! Then that lad was ashamed of that crying but over these decades HE has found that reaction has came from millions of dog owners when their ever faithful and beloved friend dies.
