Recess 2
Recess 2
“September eleventh was a very bad day
I dropped on my knees and began to pray
And if you hear what I say
That was a very bad day, hey
That was a very bad day”
We sang in protest walking straight down the block of our school
The world had bigger bullies than I do
On my trip to the zoo
I was a beast
An animal
Last in line
Paired with
Light skinned, chipped tooth , Harold
Who got left behind with me and Nairobi
In the girl’s bathroom
“I like your pants”
I said to Nairobi
Paying her a false complement
Acid jeans
Not my style
Scared, I rushed out of the bathroom
Before giving her a reason to hit me and change her mind
I barely spoke English
Harold’s thumb and index finger
Held the end of my sleeve
For I’m diseased
He made me pet the dirty, wooly sheep
The soft haired one was out of my reach
Don’t remember if he’d ever laid a hand on me
But he seemed like the worst of my enemies
Sickened was he in my presence
Reginald , a third grade classmate of mine, a skinny ,black Bobblehead boy
Waited for me at the top of the red staircase in between classes
For the secret one-on -one match he organized
I was his drum
Kicked and punched
Beaten on the back and stumped
Five minutes later
His work was done
He liked to roll around and run after Calia during recess
The smartest in my second grade class
