Rain
They say when it rains it pours,
and I say: Does it ever!
For I remember such a time as that.
It was a time when each day when I woke,
I’d look outside and see on the horizon
sky overcast and clouds of gray descending.
And always in the distance was that rumble -
that never-ending Mother Nature’s grumble -
thunder that foretold yet another day of doom -
a day of gloom that seemingly bypassed all my friends and neighbors.
Common sense should have told me I was not alone.
Elsewhere in the world were others like myself in deep despair,
looking out on their own frightening horizons of doom,
but we humans are a sorry lot, often self-absorbed (at least I am).
When our world is topsy-turvy,
everybody’s else’s world seems right side up.
Day after day after day it rained
and it rained
and it rained
and it rained.
I learned to live with constant dread
and the thought that the tears I cried had to be evaporating,
going back up to the sky,
then raining down again
more sorrows on my head.
Oh, the woes, they just kept pouring down
until one day I woke and looked outside my window.
This time I spied a DROPLET, not of rain, but of SUNSHINE -
one single ray of precious light
and with great delight, I raised my head.
Thankfulness exuded from my soul as I praised God.
Light beget more light, and I inhaled
the sweet petrichor of a dewy morning.
Compared to storms that recently I’d weathered,
The current storms that come my way today
have seemed as but a mist,
and even mediocre days of little sunshine I have savored.
But yesterday, thunder boomed, and something loomed
outside my window.
I went to take a peek and saw some storm clouds gathering.
In my hand I caught a single drop of moisture.
Will there be a downpour in my very near tomorrow?
Dread again
comes creeping into my soul.
