Rain

They say when it rains it pours, and I say: Does it ever! For I remember such a time as that. It was a time when each day when I woke, I’d look outside and see on the horizon sky overcast and clouds of gray descending. And always in the distance was that rumble - that never-ending Mother Nature’s grumble - thunder that foretold yet another day of doom - a day of gloom that seemingly bypassed all my friends and neighbors. Common sense should have told me I was not alone. Elsewhere in the world were others like myself in deep despair, looking out on their own frightening horizons of doom, but we humans are a sorry lot, often self-absorbed (at least I am). When our world is topsy-turvy, everybody’s else’s world seems right side up. Day after day after day it rained and it rained and it rained and it rained. I learned to live with constant dread and the thought that the tears I cried had to be evaporating, going back up to the sky, then raining down again more sorrows on my head. Oh, the woes, they just kept pouring down until one day I woke and looked outside my window. This time I spied a DROPLET, not of rain, but of SUNSHINE - one single ray of precious light and with great delight, I raised my head. Thankfulness exuded from my soul as I praised God. Light beget more light, and I inhaled the sweet petrichor of a dewy morning. Compared to storms that recently I’d weathered, The current storms that come my way today have seemed as but a mist, and even mediocre days of little sunshine I have savored. But yesterday, thunder boomed, and something loomed outside my window. I went to take a peek and saw some storm clouds gathering. In my hand I caught a single drop of moisture. Will there be a downpour in my very near tomorrow? Dread again comes creeping into my soul. Written June 5, 2016 for Rain, Rain come my way Contest

Congrats, my friend, on a well-deserved #1 in Brian's contest. You are on a roll! Your free verse is just amazing, though you probably wouldn't call it your strongest suit, you still know how to make it sing. I hope your days are filled with the hope of sunshine and not the dread of rain. Oh, and I shall have to use the word, 'petrichor' in a sentence next time a rainstorm ends! Hugs ~ John

I almost cried and do now take back anything I might have said inferring you did not do emotion. This is loaded with emotion and fear and I'm touched. Someone is knocking on my door - later. Hugs ... CayCay

I was right :)! I thought this gem could be yours, Andrea! You have this unique way of writing your free verse poems & I knew this would place high! Your take on rain is something that I could see myself writing. I enjoyed how you delved into rain and sorrow here, then mixing it with sunshine then going back again to rain. I loved how you made this in a conversational tone and I really enjoyed reading this one aloud! Big congrats on your win & thanks so much for writing this sweetie :)!

Excellent metaphor using rain and gloom as your tears and despair. I hope that your life has not been all that gloom and despair. I do know that your poetry is the light in your life. Your poetry is the light in my life. You make me smile and laugh, cry and weep, think and ponder, wonder at the many ways a single word used in such a way can be used to bring all these emotions out. Lovely Andrea my gifted sister, I love you.

Eyes soaked with tears of passion that not ran down through cheeks and evaporated and returned again as passion that reflects in soft heart. Beautifully done my lovely smiling friend. Best of luck with a soft heartted 7. Loved always, bl

Torrential rain that cleans the atmosphere of all impurities should be a delightful experience if fear of danger is not present! A captivating and dynamic poem with extraordinary imagery dear, Andrea. Good luck!
