Pursuing Dreams

A Sonnet in ~ Iambic Tetrameter ~ At age eighteen he fled his home Could barely wait, despised his town To see the world all on his own He'd wear a smile, no more to frown He traveled in a makeshift way Hitched rides in vans and sneaked on trains When desperate, he stowed away At times got drenched by gusts of rain Two years he spent pursuing dreams Grew wiser as the time crawled by Found out that life's nor peach nor cream For home and hearth, began to sigh... Came back and knocked on his front door Discovered that 'twas 'home' no more

I guess leaving home changes you, so that you're not the same when you come back. I suppose that's life-growing and changing. This poem is captivating, Gershon. It's in my faves.

Yup, I agree. Leaving home does change a person... And then too, they say 'You can't go back!' :) gw

He sounds like the prodigal son who received a surprise ending.

The 'prodigal son' got the proverbial 'cattle prod,' I guess. :) gw

You're just showing off! He made the right choice. If he'd stayed he would have been a bitter, miserable being. Only in leaving did he realize the goodness of home. This is a FAV for me.

Gershon, This is lovely. Have you heard the old saying "You can't go home again". Beautifully Written ~ Debra

That old saying you've cited is the truest of truths there is. (See 'Our Town,' by Thornton Wilder, Act 3. If you've never seen or read the play, you're in for a treat. And it's short. somber, yet sweet, as well). Thanks, Debra, Gershon

You take a risk, you gotta be prepared for a loss too... (Unless you're 'too big to fail.').

So, like Robert Redford, he retreated to build his own little world?

Only thing separating Redford and this character -- a hundred million buckeroos or so... Smiles, gw

Very nice Iambic Tetrameter, gw. I enjoyed it, but the last line caught me by surprise, even though it is inevitably true!

Surprises just part of life, I guess. Where there's risk, there's not always reward. ~ Truth and Consequences

To flee from home…free? A jail of one’s own making?

I enjoyed the tetrametic flow in your Sonnet GH! ( made that word up, sorry! ) It perfectly portrays life and its quest, rewards and risks! well done!

Even Pollyanna sheds a tear or two at times, I guess. Hope that's not too disappointing. (We are supposed to be adults here, are we not?!... Although sometimes I wonder about myself...) Thanks, Debbie :) gw
