Purple Suns and Orange Dew
She handed out the papers
and the box of crayons – eight
then she started talking
but, you know—I couldn’t wait.
I made a sun of purple
shining on an orange sea,
stick figure of my sister
as she sailed away with me.
On an island in the distance
in a blue and yellow tree
sat a black and reddish bird
singing rainbow colored music
in a voice I’d never heard.
Then a ruler hit the desk top
and a storm upon the sea
stole the sun of purple
the blue and yellow tree
sent the bird to flying
hid its rainbow in a cloud
as a voice of rumbling thunder roared
“I HOPE THIS MAKES YOU PROUD!!”
All the others kept their papers
yellow suns and seas of blue
none of them had learned
what dreamers always do
in visits to the worlds
of purple suns
and orange dew.
