I was a total novice when I joined the site hadn’t got a clue what was wrong or right You were arrogant with overbearing bravado patronising me, saying my poetry was trite In your eyes I didn’t write ‘proper’ poetry and became hell bent on humiliating me Acting like you were a poetry aficionado who’d swallowed an archaic dictionary You made barbed comments, it was so cruel and even challenged me to a ‘poetry dual’ behaving like an egotistical desperado - in the end you’re the one looking a fool I stopped posting poetry for a short while got soup mails, folk were missing my style People preferred my wit to the dull ‘dodo’ he left the site, I stayed to bring a smile! A true tale of what happened to me a few months after I joined soup - this guy couldn't stand the fact my fun poems were more appreciated that his 'superior' sonnets and he challenged me to a dual to see who got the most comments and reads. Thanks Jenna, it is so sad to see it still going on, I have lost several dear friends who couldn't stand the trolling any longer, it makes me sad it still continues... this happened to me in 2014 when I was pretty new to the site and a total novice to poetry:-( hugs jan xx

Jan, I do remember this and now I have forgotten who the culprit was. there are a few in my mind who it could have been. i know a few of them have gone away, thank heavens!!! I think we have all experienced this to an extent. I've had severe criticism too. We can only ignore it and not let their evil words get us down!!

It has a massive impact on me at the time, now i won't bow down to bullying if folk dont like my style fine but I won't be prevented from trying to make people smile with my silly poems:-) hugs Jan xx

G’day Jan … this appalling behaviour has happened to a few poets I believe. I’m so glad you didn’t follow him into a sewerage pond. There’s plenty of room for every poet, but not for those who think they are the only poet - loved this verse Jan - Lindsay

I have seen such nastiness and people leave the site especially women, but one thing for sure I am never giving up penning my silly poems and if folk dont like my 'simple style' then i am fine with it - they have no need to comment:-) hugs jan xx

Like most cowards Jan they throw down the gauntlet, hoping you’ll blink first, I had a similar encounter with some idiot who passed a belittling comment on one of my poems and a desultory one on my nationality so I added in an extra stanza for him, he took his comment down and he’s now left the site, great poem by the way best of luck in the contest cheers David

If I may? I do not understand why anyone would worry what others think of their poetry? I think you write wondefully and you need not worry about others. Write for yourself as I do. You write what you feel. This is a website where we post poems. Not all read or comment and that is okay.. Keep writing and never allow anyone to bully you.

thanks Klio, i was going through a vulnerable time life and this guy knocked what little self confidence out of the window and if it hadnt have been for friends supporting me I would have left the site. Sadly i have seen poets leave (especially women) because their lives have been made a misery by trolls on the site:-( hugs jan xx

Your poetry is versatile and refreshing, both entertaining and thought-provoking, always with heart and soul. You won the battle, showed your resolve, and the site is a much better place because you are here. Sadly John over my time on soup I have seen friends leave because they could no longer put up with bullying, I was at a low ebb emotionally when it happened and would have left if it hadn't been for people begging me to stay. I checked and see this person is still posting elsewhere so his work is being enjoyed by others as is mine:-) hugs jan xx

you've described this so well, jan, but i'm so sorry this happened to you. i know that a number of people have had this happen and i've had a few nasty comments, too. i really can't understand what pleasure someone gets from putting someone else down. didn't we all learn, "if you don't have something nice to say, say nothing"?

Hi Jan, This is a good entry for the contest theme. I am so glad that you came back. Although you write humorous poems such as Limericks and etc. You can write in all the other styles too.You are a talented lady and myself and others here on SoupVille Lane like your style. Well written Jan. I can understand why you left, it's not easy. Glad you joined back. Your poetry is great. Remember a person who comments negative is portraying a bad image in front of all. Comments are visible to all. He is tarnishing his own image. Take care. Enjoy your day. Regards Rama

I only stopped writing for about a week, I guess he didnt like a woman who wrote what he considered to be inferior poetry be more popular than him and his superior poems. I will never bow down to bullying like I received from him and neither should anyone else on the site be put down for the way they write:-( hugs jan xx
