In the past, where I seldom visit There is a soul I’d like to remember He was a preacher who traveled the mountains The ridges of North Carolina and Tennessee Going back and forth to alters across the hills Reaching hearts and souls who needed to hear The gospel of salvation by the blood of Jesus In the past, where my heart seeks remembrance There lives a man who taught that salvation comes Through faith in a Savior who gives us amazing grace Helps us to feel alive within the soul who needs to believe God is on the throne and He will give us love and peace In the past, where there was once a man of faith He taught about love that is alive and hope that thrives Inside the heart of those who know God gives us all A sense of assurance that comes from the heart who believes Love this strong is colored in shades of crimson blood From the One who died so that we might know real love In the past, where my mind visits, thinking out loud about All the hopes and dreams that were alive then The colors of silence and the memories of a life then Where nearly everyone knew the most intimate truth That God, in all His glory, brought us a Savior One who would guide us through the darkness Into the heart of joy – kindness – whispers of silence Where we can know that our faith is the greatest gift God has placed inside our chests with hearts who rest Against the murmuring whispers of serenity and strength All the praises that come from knowing that God Is the One who forgives all our faults and flaws, our sins And gives the second chance we need to begin again There was a man who lives in my past, just beyond my grasp And he knew the way to light up the heart Was given when Jesus arose from the darkness Out of the grave, He became the great healer The leader, the fulfiller, the One who would give us Salvation that stills our fears and fills us with a sense of peace And love that is alive, living inside the one who knows Jesus lives in the heart and owns the very soul Of those who give Him absolute faith and complete control This man in the past preached faith in Jesus And I will always be grateful for His legacy For it is bound in chains of blood that covers All the sins I might have been captive of Thankfully, He freed me! This man was my grandfather and I’m sure he must have prayed For me and my family… long before he went away To that happy home on high, where God took him In the blink of an eye… to heaven where Jesus abides The legacy that I speak of is one that I appreciate more Than any other I can think of… this man was assuredly a great giver Of all the gifts of the spirit, the ones that made His faith sure And gave us the chance to share his praises with the world God has given me the assurance that I know Him Not because of this preacher in my past, but because I am covered by the blood of the Lamb! Written in remembrance of a preacher named Rev. Jeff King, who was a grandfather I didn’t ever meet, but still am sure is one who prayed for me before I came to be! God knows all things before they are even imagined or dreamed of.
