Pause Between Summer and Autumn POTD

Pause Between Summer and Autumn

Summer sighs ~ she pauses to gaze on days
When sunlight drips from feathery birch leaves
Whispering of growing large, ripening,
Enchantress turns maize to fields of spun gold
She sways in rhythms of pregnant harvests
Only seen in dreams of the equinox.

As white clouds gather, like storms in waiting,
She gathers new bluebirds in her warm heart
Singing with their harmonies as light fades,
Like that comma of stillness in between
Daylight and dawn, she savors this moment
Before autumn plants frost upon her blush.

Your poem is exquisitely beautiful, capturing with sublime finesse the delicate interstice between summer and autumn—a fleeting moment suffused with tranquil anticipation and the whisper of impending change. Reading it was a profound delight.

My Dearest Rhyme Time Friend, you capture the "pause between summer and autumn" with enchanting finesse! Your imagery is exquisite, my sweet poetry sis. I especially loved "Enchantress turns maize to fields of spun gold" -so rich and vibrant!" Also, I was struck by "that comma of stillness in between/Daylight and dawn" that brings the pause between seasons into perspective. The hint of harshness to come "white clouds gather, like storms in waiting" is perfection! Congratulations for your success in Mark's contest. Warmest wishes sent to you, my gifted poetry sis, on the lilt of bluebirds' song.. ~Susan

Sam, there’s a soft, almost musical flow to your poem. “ She gathers new bluebirds in her warm heart / Singing with their harmonies as light fades …” Congratulations on your top 10 win on Mile 14 of my 2025 Poetry Marathon Contest. We’re well past the halfway point! Keep your running shoes on, because Mile 15 has already started.

Dear sweet Sam, sorry I missed your POTD. This is such an engrossing poem about the interlude between summer and autumn. Sorry, these days, I have missed many of your sweet poems, never deliberate but due to lack of time. Both summer and autumn, I love. Now we are having our rainy season here which I rather hate. Your description of autumn as an 'enchantress who spuns maize to fields of spun gold' is so very catchy and lovely. Altogether a sweet poem which well deserves the honor of POTD. Congratulations dear friend.

Dearest Valsa, it seems we are in the same boat with our time constraints! Your message of congratulations is so very special. While I love fall I always have a difficult time letting go of summer. And being from the NW I relate to a "rainy" season. Truly that change from summer to fall is an interlude. The ultimate change is so dramatic yet summer pauses to catch her breath and smile on her season. Dear friend, your visits are special and I am so grateful. I hope all is well. Sending you blessings of joy and warm shelter from the rain.

A very good flow of empathy, to my estimation Sam..You manage to penetrate as far as any can the indefinite division between what can be Seen and what whispers to our inner spirit.' So My limited analysis for what its worth.'

Hi Joe, loved your analysis and I so appreciate the time you took to share your perceptive thoughts! I appreciate it! Truly, autumn whispers to us in late summer as leaves change color, days grow shorter and the fields give up their bounty. It happens before our eyes but you are right when you say it starts like a whisper! Thank you! Sending you blessings of seasonal joy!!

Dear Sam, Congrats on POTD. Reading it made me want to stand barefoot in the grass, watching the last of summer slip away while pretending I could keep her here a little longer. But knowing you, you’d probably just wink at autumn and say, “Your turn.” Loved it, my friend you’ve got the magic touch with seasonal goodbyes. Blessings, Dear Sam, Daniel

Dear Daniel. I am most remiss in not getting back to you sooner to thank you for your beautiful note of congratulations! This summer seems to have slipped through my fingers like sand at the beach! I loved the thought of summer pausing for a moment before packing up her long days, fragrant flowers, cloud ships and green trees then giving autumn a kiss before going south for the winter. I have to admit as much as I love fall, I always want to hang onto summer's song just a little longer. Thanks for standing "barefoot in the grass" with me to enjoy this POTD, my friend. Sending you blessings of summer joy!

Hi Anne-Lise! This theme really captured my imagination. Of all the seasonal changes only summer to autumn has this lovely pregnant pause where everything seems to stop for just a moment, take a breath then readies for a new season. Thank you for pausing with me. Hugs and blessings!
