Paper Fine Threads

Paper fine threads of soft petals grow Steeped a crimson red they bleed and flow I watch the old man stooped low against a lamp post Seeming to collect crumbs of reminiscences I see the blood red emblem flash upon his chest And realise his thoughts come from far distances Paper fine threads of soft petals grow Steeped a crimson red they bleed and flow I see eyes washed with tears flowing rivers from him Trembling hands struggle with their grip on the damp post Across the street a monument stands filled with wreaths My own eyes mist wondering who he misses most Paper fine threads of soft petals grow Steeped a crimson red they bleed and flow Bright medals braid his chest in a dazzling display Silver threads whip above his brow with dignity My tears drop while imagining his history Thinking of his struggle to help humanity Paper fine threads of soft petals grow Steeped a crimson red they bleed and flow I watch his arm raise slow to offer a salute A thank you to the Brothers he once walked beside Then see him shuffle away head bowed very low For what I saw today my heart fills with sad pride Paper fine threads of soft petals grow Steeped a crimson red they bleed and grow Jane Shields (C)
