Pack Rat

I am sneaking Down a side street I see trashcans In a backyard I walk over To look in them Refuse waiting To be picked up I am happy To collect it Because I am Just a pack rat

Jon, I am inching my way down your "forms" and have arrived to free verse. I already read the first one, and this is the only other free verse you have. I enjoyed this. We have a guy in our neighborhood who is mentally ill. I know his wife and feel so sorry for her. He is one of those guys that can't throw things away and their house is utter chaos, plus he goes up and down the street getting into people's garbage.OH MY. His poor poor wife. he's making her crazy too.

I think this is the only Free verse poem I've ever written. I much prefer rhyme. I'm glad you enjoyed the poem. Thank you.

I've heard it said that one man's trash is another man's treasure. In many ways it's true. Good write.

Thank you, What I don't understand is why people would throw away brand new stuff. And I have found such items in the trash. But it has been a long, long time since I have done this. Perhaps I should look again.

Love the last verse especially...would love a pair of wings myself! (While picking grapes for jam, my 6 yr old son stuck his hand in a wild bee hive and nearly died!) Bees are a lot like love...sweet and deadly!

You are probably referring to the "Morning Walk Parody" which I wrote for a contest hosted by Catie Lindsey. The original poem is much better you should read it. But I so enjoy parody and jumped at the opportunity to write one.

Living in Fairbanks, all the dumps are arranged with a shelter where people dump their "nice stuff" things to be repaired or too good to throw away. Most women put unsold garage stuff there too. I furnished a 3 bedroom apt completely--furniture and all. The only thing new was the mattresses! I had 2 teen aged boys that loved to dig around, and they did all the work...what fun for a packrat like me! Fun poem, humorous self evaluation!

My mom used to the same thing. That's what inspired the poem. I have to admit I have done it on occasion too.
