Notes About The Poem

ownership vs slavery

(a series of Senryu poems)

We no longer own
our music or software, we
we rent them - subscribe

Think streaming music,
productivity software,
like 365.

A company can
make one product and never
innovate again.

Once, you’d buy software
and they’d have to win your bucks
with something improved

But now you fee pay
monthly, forever - or you
lose that whatever.

Homes are out of reach
so people rent apartments,
Ubers replace cars

Think of subscriptions
as techo slavery, we
need alternatives

None of us can change
the housing situation
unless we team up

And elect people
who aren’t total thieves and fools
enriching themselves

It’s a crazy thought,
I know - are we capable
of it anymore?

I won’t give up my soundtrack CDs (Jurassic Park, LOTR, The Last Samurai, etc.) for a subscription. I’ve owned a house & rented cars. Now I rent an apartment & own a car. Monthly meal services and ‘Community Supported Agriculture’ exist. Is ownership less susceptible to monopolies than subscriptions? Campaign ‘contributions’ and ‘renting representation’ is a difference without a distinction. / Looking forward to your NYT op-eds in senryu, rhyme, and even limerick! /<3

This was just a rant at the subscription service model. My friends and I have conversations about how simpler things were for our grandparents - had no thousand dollar phones, no cellular or Internet service bills - they did have phone bills but they watched free TV and listened to the radio (yes attended movies and bought records). I have Apple music - but I have software rips my playlists to MP3s for my iPods (in case I decide enough is enough). Now, I should note, that I'll never have 'money' issues but their are principles involved. If you buy a house and (if you have a fixed mortgage) the cost decreases (relative to inflation) but rental costs always rise (like subscription costs). It's just an interesting subject - How can people save for retirement if the cost of everything is constantly going up? People need to try and fix their costs. Economics is interesting. =]
