Our Poet Pets
Our animals, our pets, know by instinct
to squint and look away from the sun.
But we poet-people are overrun
less by instinct than free will.
We can do damage despite ourselves.
Our children are taught to never
look at the sun.
Yet young longing eyes always
look for the bright.
Our pets are protected by instinct.
Though we poet-people may feel the animal link;
combined with the gentle and kind force of free will
that was given us as a gift,
we are protected by love.
Protection from damage by above.
Strong free will decides if our thoughts
will be right or wrong, cruel or kind.
Or which of us may choose to stare
away from the Son, and be blind.
