Opening Gifts

When we open a gift We have somehow acquired The skills to pretend It is something desired. But it may take some time And some patience to teach Little kids that the truth We must now and then breach. Yet before that occurs Children often will blurt How they really do feel, Though their statements may hurt. With some guidance and practice, They’ll earn by and by That where gifts are concerned, It’s much better to lie.

---Or just to realize that it's the thought behind the gift that matters most … But that's a 'level' for a kid, isn't it?! Hope you had a Happy Channukah, Ilene! Best always, Gershon

I see on AFV how children today behave when they receive a gift they don't want/like. I wouldn't encourage any child to lie, but some could certainly do with a Post - Emily or otherwise! Aloha! Rico

Irene, your poem hits a tender chord in the heart. We all hope our gifts will be appreciated and, as you describe so eloquently, we learn to feign enthusiasm sometimes. (I was a tomboy and people kept giving me dolls.) I understand and relate to this lovely poem. Thanks for sharing, Carolyn
