Open Letter To a Tory Minister's Wife - From One Wife To Another - Part 1

Do you ever worry about? Some of the things that I see Happening to hard working, decent families - Or can you not imagine? Here is a taste of the lives of the working poor The people your husband works very hard To keep from your door Images surely, as a woman, you can’t ignore? And true it’s not nice But it’s also not right that in an election year You don’t appear to know How the other half live, in our country Do you have to worry when your kids leave the house? Whether they’ll get to school safely Or that someone will pounce Because even if you want You can’t take them yourself as You and your husband, for the day, have already started work Will your beloveds be targeted along the way? By some uncontrollable jerks? Because it’s not safe, on public transport, despite you paying a fare There’s no security for the likes of us out there You can get attacked any time and any where Have you ever had a phone call at work? To say that one of your kids has been beaten up And his school boy attackers have put the whole incident On Facebook And that you will have to leave work to pick up your son Take him to A&E, and wait for who knows how long Your gaffer won’t be happy - and he’ll dock your pay! (Do you even know what a gaffer is anyway?) Although at least this time you’ll get to keep your job But if this happens again....? Are you already worried already about your job? As there’s mention of new zero hours contracts? Do you have to worry and can’t understand Why the school won’t call the Police Because the gang are from a certain clan And the school might be called racist Or the family are just too hard to handle? Although they will never say that out loud What happened to right and wrong in this land? Will they talk down to you in a patronising way? I doubt it with the fees you pay And treat you like a bad mum if you won’t let it go as they say Not this time, as you’ve heard stories from other parents before We’re all scared of this gang, why will you not act? You’re the Head Teacher right, this is your school It’s not like you don’t know what going on - and don’t not know the rules Do you worry about what you will tell you husband tonight? About what has happened to his son? Who like any man if the school won’t act Would want to tell the boys’ parents straight That any more of this from your kids, and you won’t know you’re born!
