Notes About The Poem

May include: An artistic painting depicting a night sky with swirling blue brushstrokes, bright yellow stars, and a crescent moon. A dark tree stands in the foreground, with a village and church in the distance. The style is reminiscent of Van Gogh.

I see a dark cypress
towering in front of me
and behind it is a village
   The tiny town
is wrapped in blue -
the blue of a night
that captures my imagination

a saffron crescent moon
   and stars like balls
of miniature suns citrine-spiraled
           wink at me
through yellow curly cues
I want to swirl with them
through the sky
  which is water-color whorled

a steeple church
and houses sapphire-hued
   sit ensconced beneath
        undulating hills

fed by comfort -
    I wish to snuggle
inside this scene
    with Vincent’s stars
 dancing in the vortex
of my slumbering mind

**Where Dreaming Worlds Begin** Some poets do not merely see the world, but kindle realms unseen, They draw from silent chambers where forgotten visions lie; Their thoughts become the rivers through a landscape yet ungreen, And teach the sleeping stars new languages of the sky. For every true imagination surpasses mortal idea, It gathers dust and darkness, then returns them clothed in light; And in that rare dominion where such wonders breathe, Andrea, My own awakened spirit finds thy vision’s twin in flight.

The diamond, in its silence, calls itself mere stone; perhaps greatness bows where lesser visions rise. I muse—whether humility claims its throne, or simplicity wears eternity’s disguise.

A thumbnail description of Van Gogh's Starry Night. At one glance, one can see the tree, the moon, the church and the whole of the town. Well done Andrea. Great imagery.

I know what you mean!! I tried to give the Starry Night as a clue to my 20 year old granddaughter. She had no idea who Van Gogh was!!

Hmmm I think my title might be making people think I never heard of this famous work. It's one of the few paintings I studied in school. Van gogh is probably one of the few artists I can name off on my ten fingers!

I like the line, "I want to swirl with them," where you inject yourself and your reaction into the poem.

Thanks. This kind of writing isn't really me, but a few people are trying to encourage me to write Ekphrasis.

Indeed, great art is spiritually stimulating. Often great art, great poetry has little to do with intelligence...and more to do with bravery, honesty -- anyone, with practice can be intelligent -- bravery requires faith not found in books.

Andrea, the peaceful night is vividly described in this well-organized poem. With constant imagery, you move fluidly from describing the cypress to the town and sky. Well done
