On Being Kind
When older people need to climb
On buses or stairs, thick the crowd--
I offer my arms, a gift of time
Rendering help which makes me proud:
Through earnest acts…each day complete
As their fumbling words lilt , ‘hello,’
While our eyes thankful warmly meet
Into near nightfall’s afterglow.
The elders I fondly admire
Summoning a charity taught,
By grandparents who never tire
Imparting favor that’s not bought.
Perhaps I always bear in mind
To be more gracious than unkind.
