On Becoming a Millionaire

Most everyone would like to be a millionaire Which accounts for the record lottery sales A win will get you short-lived publicity’s glare Reality will take the wind out of your sails. Everything about your life would be changed As folks would look at you in a different way Your children might act as if they are deranged And, don’t be surprised if your hair turns gray. Then, everything would change in your attitude As you learn there are things money can’t buy Like desirable peace, happiness, and solitude There’s a limit to the adventures you can try. So, my advice is, be happy with what you’ve got Make the most of time, abilities, and resource Riches are victories won, battles you’ve fought And coming to your end with no tawdry remorse.

Wise advice, Milt. Being happy with what you have is a good ideal. I like to think in terms of enough. Always telling myself this is enough to meet my needs. A poet friend in Texas, Bill

As Milton Berle once quipped: "I've been rich and I've been poor. I'll take rich." (Also attributed to Phyllis Diller). :)

So true, and the older I get the more I realize the truth of this.

I think many forget this when they think they have won the jackpot "there are things money can’t buy" but I know some rich people who are incredibly unhappy and some poor people who are immensely happy.

Same here. Among the happiest people I've ever known are those we met in Tanzania. Subsisting day by day without a penny, and yet they were soooo happy. Lovely people.

And rightly you should, John. You were suddenly richer than you knew! (chuckling)

You're right Milton, give me health over wealth anyday and you can't take a dime with you when your time is up. Tom
