Of Fatalism

Many people say we have free will and some try to bolster us with quotes like “Faith can move a mountain.” Some people ask for prayers when they are hurting or ill. Yes, prayers may help ease pain or even produce miracles. But who’s to say that prayers have really made the difference? Do you ever stop to ask yourself why it is that some faithful people pray relentlessly and their prayers for comfort go unanswered, while other such people pray for relief and their miracles are simply granted? Do you ever wonder why some good people drop dead in their prime (for no real sensible reason), yet someone like an addict to tobacco might live to be one-hundred? Why do some folks have bestowed on them much success or riches? Others seem mainly to meet with misfortune or to struggle to survive. Some, on their death bed, defeat the reaper! Others hear him knocking at their door and easily succumb. I’ve given it much thought and have come to this conclusion: what we do in life and how and when we die are already known by God. He even knows how we will react in all situations, and so our own demise is already known to God, and our death will be when it is meant to be! Because God already knows ALL, our destiny, you might say, truly is “written in the stars.” Do we really have free will? I think that free will involves the way we choose to react to the life we are born into. Each of us is given different challenges. Even those born unable to think for themselves have a purpose. They are here to test the patience of their caretakers, and their reward is already certain! How do we react to the life we are given? What do we do with our God-given talents (whether they be many or few)? Each of us is given different trials in life. Free will basically involves our attitude about our life’s situations and how we let this attitude affect our choices. God already knows what that will be! Therefore, I can say wholeheartedly I accept the philosophy of fatalism. Aug. 24, 2022 For Edward Ibeh's This Or That, Vol 13 Poetry Contest

Dear Andrea, your poem is wonderful. Those are questions I struggled with. Now I feel the soul knows those answers we once also knew but have forgotten. A deep thinker you are, my friend. Congrats on your very deserved First Place!

I cannot believe this Andrea, not so much the poetry, which is superb, but the subject matter, exactly as my own, to the very word. To my Fav's, there is one aspect i could add from my own point of view. That i hope there is no rebirth, for the odds today are terrifying.

Harry, I'm so pleased to hear you think the same as I. I think it was Aristotle, the philosopher who also came to this conclusion about fatalism. Consider this, Harry. What if there are other planets similar to earth? Or parallel universes. Rebirth in such a case might not be so bad!!

Jah knows Andrea, images has dwarf the intent the will engages us on. Watching the Jones push us on journey not as free as we should be. And yes Job entwined his being on God promises, wisdom, the fear of God and obedience breath life. That i believe ensures endurance.

From the account of Job Satan said man only serves God if a hedge is built around him.He said man not Job including everyone in that debate. He also stated everything a man has he will gladly give up for his life.Job unaware of this whole Charge made by the devil proved him to be the liar he is.I fully trust whatever decision he makes as I know his thoughts are higher than my own and he has the ability to see what I cannot .He can in fact read our hearts.I trust him with my life.

I wish I had the faith of Job and also of you. He made me who I am. He has a purpose in everything and of that I am sure.

Can’t be much enjoyment in fatalism for a God Andrea, I reckon if there is one, he/she knows exactly what’s going to happen, but paradoxically doesn’t know how it’s going to come about, that’s possibly left to chance or us, I enjoyed reading your fatalistic poem, in my one the universe got destroyed, free will is certainly a pickle, cheers David

That’s the beauty of the unknown Andrea, anything is possible, if we attained life once in an eternity, why not a trillion times, cause and effect are indistinguishable in quantum physics, things just appear arbitrarily out of nothing, cheers

did you do a fatalist poem too? I will go see. Heck, I also wonder if maybe we are being reincarnated (I hear it was part of Christian beliefs until it got removed by a roman emperor). Or we could be in parallel universes for all I know. There is so much strange stuff in this world. It's utterly fascinating.

If God knows all, it stands to reason, He knows the future too. I actually do not believe in the afterlife being the way most Christians believe it will be. I guess my Mormon upbringing brought me to believing that there will be many mansions or levels in the afterlife, and we will end up where we belong with our "own kind" and our "Hell" for most of us will be the remorse that we did not make it back to the highest kingdom. I am pretty sure I will not be in the high spot. Neither do I believe many will be in an eternally burning fire either. I do not believe a "parent" would put his wayward children into a place of eternal burning. Thus my fatalistic beliefs are not scary for me. I could be totally wrong about all this. Nobody, in my opinion, can know any of this for certain.

The front page of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser this morning boasts that Hawai'i is the best place to live in the USA with a life expectancy of 80.7 years, but Page A6 reports the Ninth Leading Cause of Death in Hawai'i, was Suicide, so you reckon God planned that? Aloha!

yep, that's what I am saying. But not just me. Some ancient philosophers also thought the same. I guess He knows who will pray and for what they'll pray, so maybe He does not even have to listen to our prayers. I wrote a poem once imagining angels as the beings who listen to prayers. Everything you or I believe is moot. it's all just conjecture anyway. I am certain of only one thing: our spirit goes on. In what form, etc I do not know. But there has to be meaning in this life. I refuse to accept a silly Big Bang theory to explain the perfection and logic of nature.

So your God knows in advance how PTSD impacts each individual and their family members, and who will suddenly become a "Born Again Christian" or Jihadist? The Book of Life must be an interesting read! Aloha!

yep!!! and it's not best place to live. The mandates were ridiculous. Actually I should say "God did not PLAN it; he just knew it would happen!!" There IS a difference.

The answers you asked can be found in the New Testament. The Our Father makes it clear: Thy will be done.

I enjoyed your poem, Andrea, and I agree with much that you wrote about. I personally think the idea of praying to God and having prayers answered, etc., etc., is much overrated. I can tell you of many prayers I prayed for good things that were never answered and I was in the ministry. So, go figure!

Exactly, Milton. it's our fate whether our prayers will be answered or not.

Well, in life we go through so many different journeys which can help us be stronger in resisting temptation, in character, in faith, in emotion or we can become weaker with each trial. You as a parent and grandparent know how your children are in character, emotion, strength, etc. You would only let them do what they were ready to do. Sometimes they fooled you didn't them? I agree with a lot of what you have written and disagree with some. Life isn't easy. Jr. still doesn't know ...SK

God already knows if and when your family will get better. In my opinion, just pray for their relief. I think people may not agree with my philosophy, but it's what I've come to believe.

if all his body will be working ever again. I can't imagine what he is going through but I faced a similar situation when I was 48 years old when I had spinal surgery and Doris faced some of the same when she was 12 years old. We are hoping and praying that he will be whole again. Sara
