October

leaves curl at their edges draped palms of orange, red or gold to drift downward, feather light to the cacophony of streets below in a flow of seasonal change leaves meditative a fiery corrosion their peaceful indifference to the beating feet that dance them October giddy children with puppy dog enthusiasm choose costumes fresh faces float on playful imagination like bemused grins on pumpkins innocence wraps itself in trick or treat fantasy for youngin's ignoring autumn's chilling air scavenging thief of summer October's tangible world its energy of clamorous color its frost-silver bars that cushion mornings in the slow undertow to November Poem composed September 28, 2021 Contest: October Sponsor: Regina McIntosh

Congratulations on your win. I love the fall. I lived in Vermont for 13 years and your third stanza reminds me of my time there when my children were young. It paints such beautiful pictures. I am glad to have found this one.

Thank you Marikate. You are right about the leaf glow of autumn. I wish that it lasted longer. Good health + happiness to you always. Brian

Hello Sara. Your welcomed congratulatory note is appreciated. I did veer away from bright leaves with an intent to suggest October's joy in children. Be well + recovery fully. Brian

You bring back many memories of scurrying feet through the fallen leaves, on my way to school and even later to be honest. Love the line 'frost silver bars that cushion mornings.' should do well in contest the vividness is excellent.

Greetings Harry, Most appreciative of your comments on my small tribute to October, a grand month that is all too fleeting, like indifferent affection. Be well. Sincerely, Brian

I think this is a fantastic poem Brian brimming with atmosphere and flow; flow as in how the poem's words 'move' / cadence and how the body / theme of the poem 'moves on' to November. I may not have articulated exactly what I meant there but hopefully you get the picture. Cheers - Gary
