Not worth it

I’ve been considering defense In the context of the past tense In wars that we’ve waged Where our troops have been staged Who fought as though they had been caged They employed Violence of action Inflicted fatalities to the other faction All in the name Of the USA To keep us all safe today But I wonder Of those brave ghosts of the past If they could see the now And compare it to the last Would they like what they see? Could they justify their cost For us to be free? Would they feel honored at what we are? Or would they weep at how far we lowered the bar? Would they question the sacrifice they made? Would they regret the price that they paid? Or would they look at what we became And shake their head at our pitiful shame? Was it all worth it for this ungrateful crew? Who is unworthy of what they believe their due I would say not at all I would say not worth the fall I would say they have unmitigated gall To expect to be protected When they rejected The selflessness we reflected Is this what we fought for? This selfish, entitled bore? Who is simply rotten to the core I say they are not worth it EASN

Excellent and powerful piece of writing!!! I too have been having discussions with my friends about this very subject. My father fought in WW2, and I shudder to think how thinks and feels about the mess we are in. It truly saddens me. This is the best poem I have read this year, and it is one I will be reading again.

Of course you can call me Lenny! I agree with what you said about the finest generation. My father, who is my hero, received his call-up papers on his 18th birthday in 1940! That must have been quite a shock for him. He never spoke much about the war, and when he did they were funny stories, like the time he ended up behind enemy lines(it wasn't funny at the time though!). Sorry for rambling Eric!

Lenny, may I call you Lenny? Your father was part of what I believe are the finest people our nation has ever produced, and sadly will never be seen again. I wonder what he would think of what we have become. The answer saddens me as well. Though I am grateful that you have offered me your time and allowed me to walk through your mind. It is a gift I relish as much as the service your father gave for the country I still love and government I hate. Thank you for the very kind words.
