"no longer mute"
I will turn back the pages of my life to a dark time a time when I had no voice I was trapped by abuse I lived in fear each day when I met him he was extraordinary so courteous, kind handsome then, I moved in with him and suddenly, I became a slave he was cruel with his words hateful and insulting if I spoke up I was threatened he convinced me I was stupid ugly and nobody loved me or wanted me I looked down and seldom spoke I had to do what he wanted or else I was trapped and I feared for my life realizing that he had pushed away every friend I had and I was ashamed to go home to mom and dad until one night I had to get out for a bit so I told him we needed milk I walked down the street with no destination a car pulled up do you want a ride not sure why but I got in his car you look sad he said not sure why but I told him my story crying we drove around for a bit till he pulled up exactly where he found me this is what you will do when he leaves for work tomorrow call in sick to work gather a few things and leave and never return go home to your parents that is what I did the next morning now, when I think of this man I think he was an angel sent to help me it was raining that day I left without looking back and I walked for miles and miles feeling the freedom went for a cafe, and had another called my parents dad came to pick me up I felt battered and broken I slept for days my parents took care of me even took me to buy new clothes supported me back to myself no longer mute no longer abused I realize that I was lucky that I had parents and a home but, I urge any woman trapped in a similar relationship to just walk or run away before it is too late get help

Dear constance, its so sad and so haunting to read this very emotive and deep poem written from the perspective of an individual that has endured such abuse. And the ending shows resilience and strength and i can feel the emotions flowing within your lines. Especially the opening lines are brilliant in this and its never easy breaking free from such relationships or situations! Youv expressed so well in an empathetic manner! Thank you for joining me to raise awareness and congratulations on your win! Appreciate your support. And i hope so too that this will give strength for any to breakfree and start over. And believe again

Constance, you are a woman of great courage. Don't ever think otherwise. What you did was admirable. Good for you! Blessings from Newfoundland. Jim

A good plan. Some men contrived a pleasant personality just to trick women. Take a lot of time to know them.

Hi Constance, no lady should have to put up with the abuse, for an abuser will never change, getting away was the right thing to do. xx

A very sad story. I don't know if it is fictional or real. However, what you have delineated here is a life situation. It has happened in many lives and is continuing. Fortunately you showed the courage to walk away from that abusive monster that now you can breathe free and stay calm. How I wish all abused women show such courage! Great entry for the contest, dear Constance. All the Best.
