Night Driving

I want to take a drive tonight
through a maze of half-lit roads
paved in onyx shadows.
I want to follow starry streets
that roll in waves of cold concrete
beneath the opal moon.
I want to cruise across the city
through pockets of rose gold light
that bury me in brightness
before throwing me back into night.
I want to merge with this sea of speed,
hear that feline engine purr,
watch the world fly by in abstraction--
an incandescent blur.
I want to join the glowing ribbon
of headlight pearls on midnight highways
that twirl and spin in shimmering arcs
of taillight rubies.

Mary and I live in Kelowna which is in the Okanagan valley on Lake Okanagan. We are surrounded by wineries, golf courses and mountains. Very dry and hot climate. Most people don't know we have a spot in Canada with a desert environment. We use to live in Vancouver which is a spectacular city but to much rain for me. I love the dry hot weather here and the lakes, great hiking and views, we also have 2world class ski destinations within a half hour drive.

Oh Heather....you ARE a kindred soul. I was going to write on on this....I LIVE for rides in the car...the music blaring...the lights of Beirut are absolutely captivating...We have the sea and the mountains....so everywhere you look...lights glisten in degrees! You have such a stupendous way with words...This is absolutely amazing! There is a ethereal feel to it! I applaud you!

How the heck are ya, Heather? I wanted to stop in while I have a chance and say hi and thanks for the place in your contest. Wouldn't you know it...as soon as I get my PM, I get too busy to do anything with it...oh well...maybe in a month or so I'll have more free time at work. Now...your poem...is killer. It makes me miss my bike, but it's a fave for sure!

Absoulutely wonderful! I'm a huge road warrior. Sunrise/Sunset drives are what I live for. I have a good car to help continue spurring those urges. Loud music & 75 mph cruises...a tasty combo.
