Next Time We Will Take You
husband and I rarely leave house
at same time
someone having to stay home
with the baby
Our cocker spaniel Sophie
Today we did.
She had hurt eyes
when we got out of the car
We had been gone twenty-three minutes
but I felt guilty
Until I came into the living room
where she had parked her mangy
six-year-old broken necked toy duck
at the top of my favorite recliner
I gave her a look and tossed her “baby”
off of my recliner.
So she turned to her Daddy.
“Next time we will take you,” he said.
Yes, I thought, because if we don’t
you will putting my lipstick on the duck.
